Diana Vreeland Memos

An illustrated collection of professional memos and letters from Diana Vreeland during her tenure at the helm of Vogue. When Diana Vreeland became the editor-in-chief of Vogue in 1963, she began a transformation, loosening up years of tradition and shaping the magazine into a modern, trendsetting publication. Vreeland’s Vogue was as entertaining and innovative as it was serious about fashion, and she initiated changes that made the magazine more visionary, forward-looking, and relevant. Vreeland rarely held meetings, and communicated with her staff, colleagues, and photographers through memos and letters.

This extraordinary compilation of Vreeland’s professional correspondence (including previously unpublished letters to Cecil Beaton, Horst, Norman Parkinson, and Alexander Liberman) takes the reader behind the scenes of Vogue in the 1960s. It displays Vreeland’s famous irreverence and over-the-top pronouncements (“I have just sent in some fake leather to Mrs. Ingersoll. . . . It is absolutely superb. It will change the course of history.”), and reveals the editor’s sharpness and exactitude about what Vogue should be. Vreeland’s letters are accompanied by period photographs from the magazine, and commentary from former Vogue editors who worked with Vreeland, giving readers a unique and truly inside look at how Vreeland directed the course of the world’s most influential fashion magazine.
