Jules de Balincourt

This book – the most comprehensive on the artist to date – will consider the artists rich and varied influences and use those various themes to structure the book. The artist’s very unconventional upbringing – born in France to French parents who later moved to California – in quasi-hippy communes of Southern California in the late 1970s, provide an interesting backdrop to consider the artist’s work. Layered throughout the plates in the book, will be artist’s many reference materials – from newspaper clippings to textiles from South America. The writers will address his import: Katy Siegal will look at the unique painterly language he created at a time when artists like John Currin and Lisa Yuskavage were dominating the painting landscape. Matthew Higgs will contribute his signature interviews in the form of 20 questions. And Dave Eggers will contribute a more literary text on the artist’s work. EXHIBITION DATES: Musee des Beaux Art, Montreal: June – August 2013
