Shambhala Publications was established in Berkeley, California, in the 1960s. Now based in Boston, Shambhala specialises in books that present creative and conscious ways of transforming the individual, the society, and the planet. The notion of translating spiritual insights into action in the world is embodied in the companys name Shambhala, the legendary Central Asia kingdom that symbolises an enlightened way of life, harmonising the inner and outer worlds. Thus the Shambhala worldview enables them to publish in wide variety of subject areas, including psychology and the sciences, the arts and creativity, business and economics, and health and healing.
Religion and philosophy remains at the heart of Shambhala’s publishing programme, publishing titles by authors such as Chogyam Trungpa, Ken Wilber, Pema Chodron, translations by Thomas Cleary, and Natalie Goldberg. They also now publish Snow Lion books.
