Tadao Ando: Houses

The most complete and comprehensive collection of residential projects from the world’s most internationally recognized and renowned architect. Though prolific in civic and commercial work, Tadao Ando first gained recognition for his residential projects: single and multiple family homes constructed solidly of concrete but ingeniously imbued with light and air. Such natural elements have remained a constant in Ando’s work from his earliest ventures, and each new project demonstrates the skill with which he is able to utilize such intangibles as building blocks to construct dwellings that are both intimate and spacious. Tadao Ando’s structures are immensely practical and habitable as well as rigorous and dynamic, often seeming to have evolved naturally out of the surrounding environment to shelter their inhabitants; serving as living spaces in both senses of the word. This exhaustive study is a complete catalog of all his residential work to date, including two new homes just finished in 2013. This volume includes unseen and unpublished works presented through lavish and striking color photographs as well as detailed architectural drawings and plans of over thirty years of Ando’s residential work, from the Sumiyoshi Row House in 1975 to the current houses for such design connoisseurs as Karl Lagerfeld and Tom Ford.
