The Photographs of Joan Leigh Fermor

Joan Leigh Fermor (1914-2003) had something enigmatic about her nature which, together with her wonderful good looks, made her a very seductive presence and a talented photographer. Deceptively artless, her vision was both intimate in portraiture and architecture and panoramic in landscape, and most firmly focused in an abiding love of Greece. The archive of 5,000 images now in the National Library of Scotland and introduced in this monograph reveals a 20th century photographer of significance. A collection of over 200 photographs reproduced in this book span from her first snapshots of bombed London during the Second World War (her first commissioned photographs) to Greek islands landscape and traditional buildings. Some images portray intimate moments of Joan and Patrick Leigh Fermor and the group of intellectuals gathering around the couple during their time in Greece.
